John Dennis Hiott
December 4, 1945 - January 30, 2026
Surrounded by his loving family, The Great Architect of the Universe called Brother John to the Celestial Lodge above on January 30, 2026;
John was a man of many jobs; he was first and foremost a loving husband, father and grandfather. He cared deeply for his family and would do anything to keep them happy and safe. He married his high school sweetheart; Brenda and together they built a life and a legacy lasting over 60 years.
John joined the Air Force as a Refrigeration Mechanic and one of his most admirable feats was his service in the Vietnam War. He put his life on the line for his Country and thankfully returned home; an experience that would live with him forever. He was also a local business owner; starting John Hiott Refrigeration & Air Conditioning 54 years ago.
While building his business, he was an active supporter of the sheet metal program at Kent Vo-Tech. He was fortunate enough to have his daughters join the business and was able to enjoy some years of retirement. He also had served as the President of the Camden-Wyoming Rotary Club from 1991-1992.
Most people knew John from his loyalty to the Masonic Fraternity. As a Mason his accomplishments were numerous. In Blue Lodge he served as Worshipful Master of Union Lodge #7 twice. York Rite he has served as High Priest, Grand High Priest, Illustrious Master, Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Council of Cryptic Masons of Delaware, Eminent Commander, Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Delaware. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite, NUR Shrine, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Eastern Star Victory Chapter #15 and Zephyr Lodge No. 198 located in
Zephyrhills, FLOutside of his dedication to his Craft and community; he was a family man through and through. He was an active band parent for the Caesar Rodney Marching Band when both Debbie and Lisa were in the band and was considered the best "girl dad" by his daughters and their friends. He enjoyed sport fishing and his boat; El-Shock-O was known by many. He also had a deep appreciation for a good cigar and a glass of fine scotch. May he now rest in the peace he so deserves.
John is survived by his wife of over 60 years; Brenda. His daughters; Debbie Hiott-Vandegrift (John), Karen Watson (Andrew), Lisa Darling (Kevin) and his grandsons;
John Tyler Smith and Braeden Vandegrift.
Services to be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at Torbert Funeral Home, 1145 E. Lebanon Road -
Dover, DE. Visitation is from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., with a Masonic service at 1:00 p.m. (everyone can attend this, followed by the Memorial Service. There will be Fellowship and Food immediately following the services at The Masonic Lodge located at 1478 Wyoming Mill Road -
