John Charles Hovis

John Charles Hovis, age 76, of Venice, Florida, and formerly from Elmore, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on May 8, 1948, in Toledo, Ohio, to John B. and Lois (Luckey) Hovis. John was a cherished husband, father, papa, and friend, whose warmth and kindness touched everyone who knew him.
John was a proud graduate of Elmore High School, Class of 1966, and continued his education at the University of Toledo, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. His career was marked by his dedication and expertise, first as an engineer at GlassTech and later at Libbey Owens Ford, where he made significant contributions to the field of glass, including his own patent for a glass sheet heating furnace.
John was an avid sports enthusiast, finding joy in tennis, running, and golf. His passion for these activities was matched only by his love for spending time with his family. Whether on the court, the track, or the golf course, John's energy and enthusiasm were infectious.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 23 years, Gloria (Wright) Hovis; his children, Jessica (Daren) Cable and John D. (Donna) Hovis; and his grandchildren, Noah, Aidan & Julia Cable. He is also survived by step-sons Jon (Jen) Graser and Scott Graser and step-grandchildren Emma and Sydney. John is also survived by brothers Jeff (Chryso) Hovis and Jay (Calley) Hovis. He is remembered fondly by his many friends and family, who will miss his fun-loving spirit and kindness towards all.
John's legacy of love, laughter, and dedication to those around him will continue to inspire and uplift all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever remain in our hearts.
