John Howerton, 72, of Collins, Iowa, passed away in his home on August 17, 2025. No services are scheduled at this time.

John was born in Des Moines, Iowa on April 7, 1953, to Herbert and Margaret (Moore) Howerton. He grew up in Ankeny where he attended Ankeny High School. Following school, he joined the Marines and proudly served his country in the USMC. Upon moving home to Iowa John began working as an Iron Worker with the Local 67. He later took a job with the Animal Disease Lab in Ames which he remained at until his retirement. John and Karen Lewis were married in Nevada, Iowa. They raised their family in Colo and later moved to Collins.

John enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also liked to fish, hunt, golf, watch westerns, work on guns, and tinker on broken stuff to fix up and sell.

John is survived by his daughter Leslie (Tracy) Geffre of Ames, son Johnny Howerton of Collins, grandchildren Carter, Mya, Dillon, and Kailyn, siblings Francie Howerton, Justin (Pam) Howerton, and Sherrie Fanning, many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, wife Karen, siblings Jimmy Howerton, Jeff Howerton, and Linda Bailey.
