John Mark "Paco" Hoyt, 74, of Keokuk, went home to be with Jesus on Friday, November 21, 2025, at the home of his daughter in Middletown, Iowa.
Mark was born on February 11, 1951, in Keokuk, the son of Vernon Earl and Genevieve Olive Varner Hoyt. He grew up in the Keokuk community and graduated with the Keokuk High School Class of 1969.
On October 17, 1969, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Linda S. Carroll, in Kahoka, Missouri. They shared nearly forty-eight years of marriage before her passing on June 28, 2017.
From a young age, John had a deep love for music, and he poured that passion into his lifelong involvement in the local music scene. He was a proud founding member of Staggard and Ripper, a band that became well-known and well-loved throughout the area. As a guitarist and vocalist, Mark helped shape the group's sound, playing countless community events, clubs, and gatherings throughout the Tri-State region. His rich voice, soulful playing, and easy stage presence made him a crowd favorite. But even more, he cherished the friendships and memories made with his bandmates and the joy of sharing music with others.
Mark later worked for Radio Keokuk, where he served as a radio DJ. On the airwaves, he became known for his smooth voice, warm personality, and his love of music, which he was proud to share with listeners across the region. Whether behind a microphone or on stage, Mark had a gift for bringing music to life and connecting with people.
Mark is survived by his son, Bryan (Golda) Monohon of North Liberty, Iowa; his daughter, Jan Hoyt-Brown of Middletown, Iowa; and his grandsons, Landon and Calvin. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Arney Carroll (Susan) of Kahoka; and his sister-in-law, Brenda Long of Bloomington, Illinois; along with many step grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Linda; his daughter, Dina Hoyt; a sister, Cynthia "Sue" Hoyt Colwell; and three brothers, Vernon Lee Hoyt Jr., David Hoyt, and Bill Hoyt.
Honoring Mark's personal wishes, cremation rites were accorded, and a graveside service will take place at a later date. His family encourages those who knew him to remember him in their own way, perhaps by turning up a favorite song, sharing a story, or listening to the music he loved so much.
The Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk is assisting the family with arrangements.
