John Hoyt Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carpino Funeral Home - Southbury on Feb. 16, 2026.
John William Hoyt (Jack), age 94, of Woodbury, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026, surrounded by family. He was the loving husband of the late June (Hoffman) Hoyt and long time companion of the late Jeannette Deegan. He was predeceased by his brother Robert Francis Hoyt.

Jack was born on July 20, 1931 in Waterbury, CT, son to the late John J. and Margaret (Kindt) Hoyt.

Jack grew up in South Britain and attended the one-room school house there as well as Bullet Hill school in Southbury. He worked as a delivery man for Foremost Dairies and Old Hundred Ice Cream and later enlisted in the Navy, where he served honorably and proudly as an EN engineman. Upon his return from service, he built a home and raised a family in Southbury, where he worked for 30 years as a U.S. Postal Service rural mail carrier. After retirement from the post office, he worked for the Town of Southbury.

Jack was a man with many interests. As a young man, his love of baseball took him to Spring Training tryouts in Florida for team manager and legend Connie Mack. His favorite team was the Tampa Bay Rays. He also loved the sport of horse racing and owned several thoroughbred race horses over the years. Although Jack raced his horses in many states, he could mostly be found at Green Mountain race track in Vermont. He was a member of VFW Post 1607 and the USS Sturtevant Destroyer Escort Sailor Alumni Association, attending many ship reunions around the country.

Jack is survived by his three daughters, Robin Jejer (Jonathan), Allison Testa (Gary), Valerie Stitt (Kent), and son, John W. Hoyt II (Lorena); six grandchildren, Ericca Testa Johnson (Kyle), Gary Testa Jr. (Gabrielle), Kaitlyn Stitt Mehr (Steve), Kyle Stitt, Nicholle Jejer Roman (Kyle), and Nathan Jejer (Amelia); and six great grandchildren who knew him as Opa.

Friends are invited to greet the family on Thursday February 26, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main Street South, Southbury. A memorial service will directly follow at 5:00 PM. Burial will be private.

Memorial donations can be made in John's name to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Shriners Children's Hospital.
