John Eric Kammerud, 77, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away on April 5, 2025.
Johnny, as he was known to family and friends, was born on December 13, 1947, in Watertown, South Dakota, the second of three boys for Mary Elizabeth (née Edge) and Robert Kammerud. After moving to Nashville, Tennessee, at a young age, he attended the Peabody Demonstration School through high school. There he met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Barbara (née York). Following high school, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and later joined the United States Navy.
He moved with his family to Huntsville for the third and final time in 1989, working for Teledyne Brown Engineering. In retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, touring the country to visit national parks with his wife, and lending his knowledge and experience to groups including LearningQUEST and Friendship Force International.
Johnny is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara; and two children, Eric (Meg) Kammerud and Sarah (James) Kammerud; four grandchildren, Cora and Iver Kammerud and Arlo and Alina Bailey; and his younger brother, Barry (Jody) Kammerud. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Robert "Bobby" Kammerud.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Kingston Pavilion at Ditto Landing on Saturday, April 19th at 12 noon with Rev. Coy Hallmark of First United Methodist Church officiating. Dress for the service will be smart casual in spring colors.
Memorials may be made to The Land Trust of North Alabama, The Huntsville Botanical Gardens, LearningQUEST, or Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the nursing staff of CCU II at Huntsville Hospital who cared for him in his last days.
