John E Kuhnast Jr.

John E. Kuhnast, Jr. (90) of Pompton Plains passed away on September 22, 2025.

Born to John and Frieda Kuhnast on November 9,1934, John grew up in Fort Lee before moving with his family to Wayne at the age of 15. In 1959, he married Charlotte Young, and together they shared nearly 62 years of marriage before her passing in 2021. They made their home in Pompton Plains, where they raised their family.

A dedicated civil engineer, John graduated from New Jersey Institute of Technology (formerly Newark College of Engineering) and worked for Morris County for over 20 years before continuing his career with Darmofalski Engineering in Riverdale. Beyond his professional accomplishments, John pursued many passions. He had a deep appreciation for antique cars, building his own Ford Model A and Ford Model T. An avid runner, he completed countless marathons, and his adventurous spirit led him to travel widely. He was a skilled woodworker and a proud clock collector, hobbies that reflected his precision, patience, and creativity. John's love for family, hard work, and many talents will be remembered by all who knew him.

John is lovingly survived by his son, Lawrence; his daughters, Suzanne Kloos and her husband James, and Dana Lago and her husband John, and his grandchildren, Jacqueline and Kevin Kloos,and Matthew and Nicholas Lago, He was predeceased by his wife, Charlotte.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Cedar Crest for all the amazing love and care they gave John over the past four years.

Visiting hours will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 pm Sunday, September 28 at Scanlan's.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association would be greatly appreciated by John's family.
