Obituary of John Landaburu
John Landaburu was born in Abadiño, Basque Country, on March 24, 1951. He was raised in Durango with an older sister, Maribi, and a younger sister, Belen. John attended a Trade School in Durango, where he studied to be a Machinist. He served in the Spanish Military for four years, which at that time was mandatory.
As destiny would have it, he met the love of his life, Marilu, during feasts in Durango while she was home visiting her family. Marilu had left the Basque Country and was living in New York with her sister. John and Marilu married and traveled to New York to embark on a new life together in Brooklyn, New York. They had their first child, Ander, in 1977 and then Nikole in 1985.
While in New York, John worked as a Foreman with Neptune Machinist in Brooklyn until he became part of Local 94 with the Operating Engineer Union in New York City, where he spent the last 20 years of his career until retiring in 2017.
John was extremely proud of his culture and heritage. John and Marilu became active in Eusko Extea of NY, the Basque Club of NY. John became the President of the Club from 1985-1998. He was passionate about bringing people together to eat, drink, laugh, and make incredible memories together. To say that everyone loved John is an understatement. He had the enduring nickname of "Presi" by all the members of Eusko Extea. He was an instrumental person in preserving the Basque Culture in New York.
John's happiest moments were with his family, especially his grandchildren, Mason and Noah. John would shower them with love and a ton of toys, spoiling them every opportunity he could.
John leaves behind many family members: his daughter-in-law, Jennifer Monasterio; son-in-law, Isaac Garcia; and John's sisters, Maribi and Belen. Brother in Laws: Fernan, Pedro Mari, Jesus, Josu. Sister in Laws: Conchi, Mari Feli, Amaia, Lourdes. Nieces and Nephews: Jon, Alex, Michele, AnnMarie, Benat, Saioa, and Idurre.
John has touched the lives and hearts of many who have had the good fortune of crossing his path. He will be greatly missed!
