John Thomas Lawes, 58 of Gaylord, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2024, at Munson Otsego Memorial Hospital.
Born in Rogers City, Michigan on October 29, 1965, he is the son of Robert B. and Irene W. (Balteau) Lawes. John grew up in Rogers City where he lived until moving to Gaylord.
He obtained his U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners license and worked on great lakes freighters for several years while he lived in Rogers City. After moving to Gaylord, he worked as a self-employed painting contractor.
In his spare time, John was an avid golfer, fisherman, Detroit Lions fan, and NASCAR fan. He also enjoyed playing poker and blackjack.
John was preceded in death by his father, Robert; and brothers Jim and Bill Lawes. He is survived by his daughter, Breanna (Chris) Mund of Gaylord; grandchildren, Ethan and Olivia Mund of Gaylord; his mother, Irene Lawes of Gaylord; brothers and sisters, Janie (John) Stoner of Rochester Hills, R. Michael “Mike” Lawes of Lansing, Steven Lawes of Gaylord, Suzanne (Joe) Bur of Cheboygan, Brenda (Doug) Snapp of Gaylord, and Timothy (Tonia) Lawes of Gaylord; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, January27, 2024 at Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service, where visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions to the Otsego County Animal Shelter.
