John Louis Legere, 83, died peacefully at his home on October 30th, 2025, after a long illness.
John was born on October 18th, 1942, at the Maine General Hospital (now Maine Medical Center). He was raised in Libbytown in Portland, son to the late Charles E. Legere and Katherine (Foley) Legere.
He married the love of his life, Suzanne (Giguere) Legere, on August 27th, 1966. To everyone who had the fortune of knowing him, John was known for his quick wit and exceptionally dry sense of humor. He graduated from Portland High School in 1960, at the age of 17, after registering with the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 217 at the age of 16. He started his five-year apprenticeship two weeks after graduation, and passed his Journeyman Plumber test at 18. One year later, he passed the Master Plumber test. He worked for several local shops and followed the overtime work out of state until 1969, when he started John L. Legere Plumbing and Heating. He chose to operate a solo business, being the perfectionist that he was, knowing at the end of the day that the work he completed for his customers was up to the high standards he set. One of our favorite sayings from him was, "A job worth doing is worth doing right".
John enjoyed 25 years of success in his plumbing business, while also fostering a passion for cooking. Seeking to devote more time to this interest, he opted for a career change. Under the tireless support of his better half, Suzanne, he entered Southern Maine Community College in 1993 and graduated in 1995 with an Associate's Degree in Culinary Arts. He then worked at Point Sebago as a sous chef, and later at St. Joseph's College as a baker and breakfast cook. He was fondly remembered by the students who enjoyed his good humor. He always knew what each of the students wanted for breakfast.
Following 16 years of service to the college, he retired. He was an active volunteer in the town of Windham, volunteering for Windham Rescue from 1977-1983. John also enjoyed assisting at the Windham Food Pantry throughout his retirement. He was a talented outdoorsman, being an avid hunter and fly fisherman. He was especially proud of acquiring his Biggest Bucks in Maine Club patch in 1998. John was a very gifted artist, painting oil portraits and landscapes that he gifted to friends and family. He created sensational carvings of wildlife, as well as ornate furniture which will be handed down to generations.
John is survived by Suzanne, his wife of 59 years; daughter Katherine Legere; son Joseph, his wife Vicki (Downs) Legere, their daughters Blair and Grace; daughter Anne and her husband Dana Thompson, and their sons, Daniel, Justin and Luke; and sister Doris (Legere) Roever. He was predeceased by his father, Charles E. Legere; mother Katherine C. (Foley) Legere; brother Charles E. Legere, Jr.
Visiting hours will be on Wednesday November 5th, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at Dolby Blais and Segee 434 River Road Windham, Maine. There will be a private burial at the Mayberry Cemetery in Windham
