John Lenney Obituary

Lenney, John L.
EAST GREENBUSH - John L. Lenney, 93, of East Greenbush, passed away Sunday, October 19, 2025, at Hudson Rehabilitation Center.
John was born in Massena, N.Y., the son of the late John and Jane (McKenna) Lenney.
He served in the US Army during the Korean war. He was a proud veteran, serving as a Military Police officer stationed in Augusta, Ga.
After serving his country, John attended SUNY Potsdam, where he gained his Master's Degree. He then went on to become a teacher at Salmon River Central School. He was also a founder of North Franklin Sports (currently N. Franklin Shamrocks).
He started working summers at the New York Power Authority while teaching, and later left teaching for NYPA. He eventually retired in 1995 as Senior Vice President of Public Affairs in order to spend more time with his family.
A very active member of the community, he was a member of the Catskill Elks 1340, Rensselaer Knights of Columbus, the Zaloga Post American Legion, and the president of the Plaza View Home Owners Association for 16 years.
His interests included watching sports including the N.Y. Yankees, Rangers, and Giants, but above all he was a family man who would do anything for his loved ones.
John was the loving father of Deborah (Thomas Hickey) Russell, Mark (Sherri) Lenney, and Michael (Risa) Lenney; the adoring grandfather of Christopher, and Orin Pickering, Peter Yewdall, and Kelsey (Corey) Brady, Shayna, and Ethan Lenney; and the doting great-grandfather of Darion Brown, Jacob and Dylan Pickering, Emerson and Elliana Brady. He was a wonderful brother to Mary (Lenney) Schaefer.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his cherished wife, Shirley T. Lenney; daughter, Patricia Yewdall; granddaughter, Shannon Pickering; and siblings, William Lenney and Betty Brusso.
Friends and family are invited to call 4 to 7 p.m., on Wednesday, October 22, in the Wm. J. Rockefeller Funeral Home, 165 Columbia Tpk., Rensselaer. A Funeral Service will be held the following morning, Thursday, October 23, at 10 a.m., in the Funeral Home. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
