Obituary published on Legacy.com by Messinger Mortuaries- Indian School Mortuary on Nov. 21, 2024.
John George Lindenthal passed away suddenly on November 9, 2024. He was born on September 4,1944 in Escanaba, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and lived there until he left for college in 1962. Growing up in the hinterland, John spent hours playing baseball and basketball from his early years through high school. The highlight of his childhood was playing on the local Little League team when they reached the finals of the Little League World Series in Williamsburg, PA in 1957. He became a lifelong sports enthusiast and played freshman baseball and one year of freshman basketball followed by three years of varsity basketball in college. He remained fast friends with his fellow players and other college buddies, "The Rodents", cohorts in mischief, staying in close touch with them all his life. John attended the University of Santa Clara in California, a Jesuit college, for both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in business and finance.
John served in the U.S. Airforce in 1968 and 1969 as a weekend reservist and was recalled to active duty when the USS Pueblo was captured by the North Koreans. John married his wife of 46 years, Mary Louise, in April of 1978. They were blessed with two children, Julia Louise and John Joseph ("JJ").
John began his professional career in finance as a portfolio manager at Crocker Bank, moving on to the Bank of America, both in San Francisco. Then he crossed the country to Oppenheimer Capital in New York City where he eventually became a Managing Director and spent decades successfully managing corporate pension funds, also surviving an acquisition of the company. He had a long, dedicated history in investments and relished the ups and downs and complexities of the stock market.
After retirement, and restless to reengage with the market, John involved himself with the firm, Ingalls and Snyder LLC, also in New York City. He spent many focused hours listening and contributing to their frequent investment meetings both in person and on the internet. He loved being with likeminded people who shared his passion for the market.
John was a member and a regular at the New York Athletic Club on Central Park South in Manhattan. He also belonged to the Lawrence Beach Club, Atlantic Beach, NY and the Rockaway Hunting Club on Long Island where he happily played tennis on their grass courts and golfed on their links course.
He served approximately four years on the Board of the Browning School in New York City where his son attended and spent nine years on the Board of Trustees at the Marymount School, also in NYC, his daughter's alma mater. There he dedicated himself to facilities and financial management. His wisdom, common sense and diligence helped the school prioritize their future strategies. He played an important role in securing Marymount's now former 97th Street campus and served as the Trustee overseeing that building's major renovation.
John also served for years as an advisor to the investment committee dedicated to the Religious of the
Sacred Heart of Mary Sisters at Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY.
He was exceptionally fit for his age. He played tennis and golf, also working out at the gym and swimming regularly in his Arizona pool. He enjoyed his new tennis friends at his racquet club in Arizona, regaling us with amusing anecdotes about their tennis habits. He had dubbed many of them with nicknames by now, a lifelong habit we think he developed in college. He loved golfing with his son and watched closely as his daughter developed as a runner in middle school and high school.
He was a quiet man with a droll sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye. Although a frugal man who knew the value of a dollar, he was generous with his charities and special individuals. We are shocked and heartbroken by his sudden death.
John is survived by his wife, Mary Louise, his daughter, Julia, his son, John Joseph (J.J.) (Ilana Hirsh) and 22 -month -old granddaughter, Sutton Magnolia; his sister, Barbara Bailey; and nephews Mark, Geoff and Stephen Bailey (Crystal White). A memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Angels Church (fondly known as The Casa) on Thursday, December 5,2024 at 1 p.m. Address: Our Lady of the Angels (The Casa) 5802 East Lincoln Drive,
Scottsdale, AZ 85253, followed by a reception to be determined.
