Colonel John Loden, Sr., age 77, passed away at his home surrounded by loved ones on April 8, 2025, in Creola, Alabama. A family man, Christan, educator, military officer, and devoted public servant, he leaves behind a legacy of leadership, dedication, and service to both his country and community.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Debra Loden; sons, Michael W. Loden and John I. Loden Jr.; daughter-in-law, Shannon Loden; grandchildren, Carrington Thornton, Michael G. Loden, and Sarah Loden; great-granddaughter, Zara Thornton. He was preceded in death by his parents Warren Lee Loden and Elouise Loden.
Born on October 27, 1947, in Mobile, Alabama, John was a proud graduate of Murphy High School. He pursued higher education with distinction at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Management in 1970. He continued his academic journey with a master's degree in education with a focus on guidance and counseling in 1972 and an administrative assistant to the principal in 1974.
John dedicated his professional life to the Mobile County Public School System (MCPSS), where he played a pivotal role in shaping alternative education programs. As an original staff member and program development team member for The Continuous Learning Center (CLC), he helped create opportunities for students needing non-traditional educational paths. His commitment to student success extended further through his work on the MCPSS countywide College/Career Day program and as a writing team member for the original MCPSS guidance plan.
Throughout his career at Satsuma High School, John served as both Diversified Department Chairperson and Guidance Department Chairperson. He also coached the school's golf team and contributed to vocational education as an advisory council member for Faulkner Career Technical Center. His expertise was recognized at the state level through his service on the governor's
education advisory team.
In addition to his contributions to education, John served his country with honor for over three decades in the U.S. Army Alabama National Guard from 1970 until his retirement in August 2004. Rising through the ranks from Special Forces "A" Team Commander (Captain) to Colonel, he held numerous command positions including Special Forces Company Commander during Operation Desert Storm (1990–91), Battalion Commander of the 167th Theater Support Command, and Commander of the 226th Area Support Group during Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003–2004). His leadership during these critical deployments exemplified courage and commitment.
John was also deeply involved in his faith community. He served as a deacon at Creola First Baptist Church, offering spiritual guidance and support to those around him. John found joy in life's simple pleasures-he loved golfing, camping under open skies, and casting a line while fishing. These hobbies reflected his appreciation for nature and time spent with loved ones.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at Valhalla Memorial Funeral Home located at 8730 Sims Rd.,
Eight Mile, Alabama 36613. A family viewing will begin at 10:00 AM followed by a public viewing from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The memorial service will commence at 12:00 PM with graveside military honors immediately following.
John Loden Sr.'s life was marked by unwavering devotion-to family, church, students, soldiers under his command, and all those whose lives he touched through service. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to future generations who follow in his footsteps of integrity and selflessness.
