John (Jack) P. Logan, 96, of Downingtown, passed away on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. Beloved husband of Joanne H. Logan (nee Sakalosky), with whom he shared 67 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, John is survived by six children, John P. Logan, Jr. (Gerrie), Joanne L. Messer (Thomas), Maryanne Fasco (Ross), Patricia A. Kane (James), Michael J. Logan (Carol), Kathleen A. Logan-Butts (Ted), 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. John was predeceased by his siblings, Michael, Kate, Peg, Thomas and Patsy.
John was born in Philadelphia; PA, the son of the late Michael and Margaret (nee Meehan) Logan. John graduated from John Bartram High School in 1948, where he earned the nickname "ace passer" while playing football. John served in the United States Army, 1951-1953 and was promoted to sergeant while assigned to the 70th Field Artillery Battalion in Nuremburg, Germany.
John proudly served 28 years in the Philadelphia Police Department. He worked in patrol and then the Detective Division before his assignment to the Traffic Division, where he spent 16 years planning and managing major events in Philadelphia. As a Sergeant, John supervised the uniform police officers assigned to President John F. Kennedy's security detail during his visit to Philadelphia in October 1963. As a Lieutenant, John was instrumental in planning the parade after the Flyers won the Stanley Cup in 1974, the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration, and the 1979 visit of Saint John Paul II, who was the Pope at the time. John was also in charge of the traffic details at Veteran's Stadium when the Phillies won the 1980 World Series. John was promoted to Captain in 1980 and worked for the Civil Affairs Bureau until his retirement in 1982.
After his retirement, John became the Police Captain for the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Public Safety. After nine months, John was promoted to the Director of Public Safety and proudly served until his second retirement in 1993. John like to say he failed retirement and proceeded to work part-time until the age of 76, finishing up his law enforcement career as a trainer and auditor for Allied Barton Security (2001-2009). During his career, John was an active member of the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police, the Catholic Police Officers and Fire League of the Sacred Heart. the Southwestern Pennsylvania Police Chiefs' Association and the International Association of Campus Law Administrators.
John was a life-long learner and ferocious reader. John attended the Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science and in 1979, at age 49 earned an Associate of Science degree and was the recipient of the Outstanding Student Award for his graduating class. At 38, John took up running. At 62, John recorded the fastest time for the 50+ age group while running in the Penn Alumni 5k race. At age 65, John began playing golf, shot a HOLE IN ONE at the age of 74 and enjoyed playing until the age of 92.
John was most proud of his family and always gave credit to his wife, Joanne, for his success and the success of their family. John had a special relationship with each of his children and was notably proud of their individual accomplishments. John was the son of Irish immigrants and enjoyed having his family, in their younger years march with the Philadelphia Emerald Society during the Saint Patrick's Day parade. John took his family to the Ice Capades at the Spectrum and Phillies games at the VET when they were younger and continued the tradition as his children married and had families of their own. Before the pandemic, the entire family (32) attended a game in June every year. John loved having all of his family together. John remained an avid Philadelphia sports fan throughout his life.
John had a deep appreciation for his Catholic faith. John was a faithful member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church for the last 14 years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 332 Manor Avenue,
Downingtown, PA. Visitation from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Friends and family are invited to pray the Rosary at 10:45am.
Interment immediately following the Mass at St. Joseph Cemetery, 1107 Glenside Road in Downingtown.
