John R. Dunn, Sr., 94, of Downingtown, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 7, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Shirley A. (Troupe) Dunn, with whom he shared 59 devoted years of marriage.
Born on September 16, 1931, John was the son of the late Joseph Alexander and Pearl Alice (Suloff) Dunn. He graduated from Unionville High School, and at young age worked alongside his brother wrangling cattle on the King Ranch.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, John served in Germany during the Korean Conflict. His service allowed him to travel throughout Europe. John dedicated 35 years to Wyeth Labs in West Chester.
He was a member of Downingtown United Methodist Church, where he and Shirl were active with the youth group program. He was also a life member of Downingtown VFW Post 845.
Throughout his life, John found joy in tending to his garden, listening to country music, crafting projects, and dancing with Shirl. He enjoyed following sports including the Phillies and Duke basketball.
Surviving in addition to his wife Shirley is his son John R. Dunn, Jr., husband of Deborah; grandchildren Paul S. Marler, husband of Kimberly, John S. Dunn, Ryan J. Dunn, and Jessica H. Dunn; great grandchildren Zachary, Erin and Meghan; and siblings June Basher, Fred Dunn, Gerald Dunn (Marie), Mark Dunn (Jayne), Samuel Dunn (Norma), Boyd Dunn (Jane), and Joann Torello; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter Sandra Lee Marler, and siblings Joseph Dunn, Mary Savini, Pearl Best, and James Dunn.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2025 at 11 AM at James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E Lancaster Avenue,
Downingtown, PA 19335. Viewing will be from 9:45 – 10:45 AM prior to the service. Burial will be in Forks of the Brandywine Cemetery with military honors.
