John Wesley Marr went to be with his Lord on February 5, 2026. He was born October 23, 1928, in a farmhouse near Pittsburg TX, the sixth child and only son of John William and Lela Rebecca Marr. His father passed away when John was one month old. Growing up, he worked cotton fields, learned to drive a tractor, enjoyed church picnics, and formed lifelong friendships. He met his future bride, Frances Helms, on her 13th birthday. At Union Ridge High School, he played basketball and six-man football and later became known for his ability to play the piano by ear.
After graduating, John attended Draughon’s Business College in Dallas and began a long, successful career in sales, most notably with Nabors Trailers for over 40 years. He married the love of his life on May 28, 1949, and they honeymooned in Hot Springs, Arkansas before he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Hawaii during the Korean conflict.
Together they built a life in Dallas, raising four children - Rick, Judy, Ronnie, and Sherrie - and eventually settled in the Lake Highlands community for 53 years before moving to Juliette Fowler Communities. John had a deep love for sports, family, and faith. He faithfully attended his children’s games, coached youth sports, volunteered at Northwest Bible Church, and was affectionately known for being early, friendly, and calling everyone his “best friend.”
John and Frances traveled extensively to visit children and grandchildren, including returning to Hawaii after 50 years. He will be greatly missed by his children: Rick (Beverly) Marr of Dallas TX, Judy (Glenn) Stewart of Tyler TX, Ronnie (Kelly) Marr of Sherman TX and Sherrie (Steve) Marshall of Houston TX, 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, extended family and many friends. While we grieve his absence, we rejoice knowing he is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior.
Visitation will be held at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer TX on Monday, February 9, 2026, from 5:00PM to 7:00PM. Graveside service will be held at Pleasant Grove Cemetery on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, 11:00AM.
A memorial service followed by a reception will be held Monday, February 16, 2026, 2:00PM at Northwest Bible Church, 8505 Douglas Ave, Dallas TX.
The family requests any donations in John's memory be directed to Pleasant Grove Cemetery, PO Box 225, Gilmer TX 75644 or Juliette Fowler Communities, 1234 Abrams Rd, Dallas TX 75214.
