John William Martin, III
July 31, 1955 – February 18, 2026
John William Martin, III, 70, passed away unexpectedly on February 18, 2026, at 2:46 p.m. He was born on July 31, 1955, in
Cheyenne, Wyoming.
John lived a life defined by service, curiosity, and an unwavering desire to help others. He proudly served in the United States Air Force before continuing his commitment to public service as a police officer and detective in Del Rio, Texas. During his time there, his sharp mind and forward-thinking nature led him to build computer systems for the department - work that later expanded to support other units. He was always ahead of his time, deeply studious and intrigued by how things worked and how they could work better.
His career eventually took him into the corporate world, where he served as a Director at KPMG and worked overseas. A frequent flier with a passport full of experiences, John embraced every opportunity to learn from the world around him. After leaving corporate life, he devoted himself to caring for his mother during her final months - a reflection of his deep loyalty and love for family.
Later chapters of his life included consulting work, time with Home Depot and Lowe's, and ultimately launching his own handyman business. He found joy in helping others solve problems, and his phone ringing nonstop this week from loyal customers is a testament to the trust he built. John would give the shirt off his back to make things right. He was empathetic, thoughtful, and incredibly thorough - never satisfied with surface answers, always wanting to understand every detail.
A lifelong learner, John earned his associate degree in Criminal Justice from Southwest Texas Junior College but continued his education through endless reading. He loved books and maintained what felt like an infinite personal library. Whether discussing world events, military developments shared by his business partner Neil, or the mechanics of an engine, he approached life with intellectual curiosity and careful analysis.
Outside of work and study, John had a passion for speed. He loved fast cars and raced as a hobby, and he had been riding motorcycles since high school. The thrill of the open road suited his adventurous spirit.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John William Martin Jr. and Susie Jane Martin.
He is survived by daughter, Ashley Ward of San Antonio, Texas; beloved grandchildren, Kenzi, Maddi, Michael, and Matthew Ingle; sister, Tammy Hancock of Burlington, Kentucky; brother-n-law, Jeff Hancock, niece, Whitney Hartman and nephew, Ryan Chesser; close family friends, Carolyn Bell, Chris Lagrow, Sarah York, Katherine York, Rebekah York and Harlee (Hector). He also leaves behind many extended family members and countless friends whose lives were better because of his kindness, wisdom, and willingness to help.
Most recently residing in
Flower Mound, Texas, John leaves behind a legacy of service, intelligence, compassion, and integrity. He will be remembered for his generosity, his thoughtful conversations, his love of learning, and his steady presence in the lives of those who knew him.
His memory will live on in every book opened, every engine revved, and every quiet act of service done for someone in need.
