John was a faithful servant of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was truly dedicated to sharing his love and commitment with others. I cheris my many memories of our years together as Lutheran School Principals. My condolences to Carol and her family. Richard Liescheidt

I was in Mr. Marten's first class at The Chapel of the Redeemer. It was a third grade class and then I had him for the next three years up to the 7th grade. In the 5th grade he started a girls basketball team and that began my love of the sport. I later became a teacher and got the opportunity to coach girls high school basketball. I now am enjoying watching my granddaughter play high school basketbal for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School. Mr. Matern was a big part of the wonderful community that was the Chapel of the Redeemer school. A safe loving place to grow up. The last time I saw Mr. Matern was in 1977 when he and his family visited me in Scotia, shortly after my first son was born. It was good to see them and talk about the times at the Chapel of the Redeemer. I send my thoughts and prayers to Mrs. Matern and her family and want them to know how grateful I was to have had such a wonderful teacher and coach.

As the principal of a neighboring Lutheran school, John´s smiling face and sense of humor brought joy to me and all his colleagues. . My condolences for your loss but know that John´s love of the Lord and his joyful smile will now be shared with loved ones in heaven.
