John E. Matheny

John E. "Jay" Matheny, age 56, died peacefully at home while surrounded by his loving family after a valiant battle with cancer, fighting well beyond all expectations to the very end. Jay was the loving son of the late Dale and Virginia (Bruder) Matheny and grew up in Pembroke. Jay was a rough and tumble kid who loved sports. He was a graduate of Silver Lake High School, Class of 1983.
He played baseball and football, but hockey was his true love. From an early age, Jay played goalie for the town of Pembroke and followed the Bruins faithfully. Jay and Jane started dating in their 20's. They married on August 29, 1998 and, after living in Medfield for a short time, settled in Bridgewater. Jay's career as a correction officer spanned over 20 years. He was proud to work alongside his fellow brothers and sisters at Souza Baranowski Correctional Center, MCI Norfolk, and Bridgewater State Hospital where he retired as a Sergeant. If you knew Jay, you knew he would always lend a hand. He could fix or build anything and took great joy in helping with carpentry, painting, cars, or anything else his family and friends needed.
As a Dad, Jay was always proud to watch his kids in their endeavors. Whether on stage or on the field, he was proud of Hannah and Jared. When at home, Jay's dog Finley could always be found at his side or on his lap. Jay loved games of darts and pool, playing practical jokes, and cooking. His culinary talents were enjoyed by all. Whether it was his gourmet Thanksgiving dinners or his barbecued feasts, his family and friends couldn't get enough. He could be found by the backyard fire pit most nights, where all were welcome to join him.
He was the strongest man with the kindest heart, and generous with his time and advice. Jay will be missed by all who knew him.
Jay was the loving husband of Jane E. (Bullock) Matheny of Bridgewater and devoted father of Hannah C. Matheny and Jared D. Matheny, both of Bridgewater. Loving brother of Dale Matheny and his wife Michelle of MO, and brother-in-law of Russell S. Bullock and his wife Jane of Pembroke, and Kathy A. Kozak and her husband Michael of East Bridgewater. Adoring Uncle of Spencer, Katie, Emily, Michelle, James, Christopher and Connor. Jay is also survived by many dear cousins. All are cordially invited to the Chapman Funerals and Cremations, 98 Bedford St. (Prophett Chapel) on Friday Nov. 5th from 4-7pm. A funeral home service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6th at 10am with burial to follow at St Thomas Aquinas Cemetery.
