John D. Mathie 92, of Millersburg, Ohio passed away Thursday December 5, 2024, at his residence surrounded by his family following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday December 13, 2024, at Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg, Ohio. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Millersburg, Ohio with military rites conducted by the Millersburg American Legion and Killbuck VFW. Friends may call 2 hours prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.
In Lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Honor Flight Columbus, Inc. P.O. Box 20133 Columbus, OH 43220 or LifeCare Hospice 1900 Akron Rd Wooster, Ohio 44691.
John was born November 3, 1932, in Millersburg, Ohio and was the son of Lewis and Ethel (Donald) Mathie. John was a 1950 graduate of Millersburg High School. He was a proud Korean War Veteran serving in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. On February 15, 1958, he married Betty Snyder. Together they raised four children. They owned and operated Mathie's Marathon for over 20 years. John drove truck for Holmes Oil for many years. During his retirement he worked for Moore's Lawn and Garden and as a courier for Park National Bank, retiring at the age of 88. John was a member of the Millersburg American Legion Post #192 for 71 years, where everyone knows him as Papa John. He was also a member of the Killbuck VFW Post #7079. John was invited on Honor Flight Columbus Mission 119 in November of 2022 to Washington DC with other fellow senior veterans. He enjoyed playing cards and hunting, especially trips to South Dakota with his family, most recently in October of 2024 with four generations pheasant hunting and playing euchre.
John is survived by four children, Dan (Tara Conner) Mathie, John (Katrina) Mathie, Marty (Gary) Grice, Linda (Adam) Campbell; grandchildren, Joel (Jezebel) Mathie, Danielle (Andrew) Hawkins, Rachel (Jake) Alexander, Brittany (Brian) Bloomfield, Jarret (Tricia) Mathie, Zac (Lauren) Mathie, Douglas (Bry Galford) Moore, Lexi (Nick) Roush, Drew (Joy) Campbell; great grandchildren, Jennavieve, Jiavanna, Blake, Jocelyn, Elaina, Carson, Kale, Gavin, Londyn, Hayes, Rowand, Graham, Rayanna, Barrett, Gunner, Teddy, Arthur, Ezra, Zayden, Emerie; and sister-in-law Shirley Snyder.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Betty; sisters Mary Lou Mathie and Jean Grenert.
