John O. Matson Sr, 79, of Hope Valley, RI, passed away on 11/16/2025 at home. Born in Westerly on 2/2/1946, son of Arthur Olaf and Aune Tuominen. He was the loving husband of MaryJo. He leaves behind his daughter Jill (Bruce Brayman) and son John (Nancy Log), step-daughter Sarah Conroy (Ian), and step-daughter Jesse Smith. He also leaves behind three sisters (Ona Brayton, Margaret Tefft and Ginny Howard), aunt Virginia Gilchrist and many nieces and nephews.

John was a self-employed local roofing and siding contractor and real estate agent. He had a passion for politics, known as the "Carpenter for Congress" with the hopes of making things better for his children and grandchildren. He had a special connection with his grandchildren spending a lot of time at their sporting events. He helped many people to become and stay sober and was proud of 42 years of sobriety. Hunting, playing softball, bowling, golfing and playing poker were passions of his. He enjoyed a true Finnish style sauna followed by a dip in the lake. He was a member of the Masons.
