John Matuszewski Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Weber-Hill & Packard Funeral Home - Crandon on Nov. 25, 2025.
John V. Matuszewski, age 83, of Laona, passed away at Friendly Village Nursing & Rehab in Rhinelander while under the care of Aspirus Hospice.
Born in Antigo to the late Victor and Dorothy (Tuma) Matuszewski, John was a lifelong resident of Forest County. He married the love of his life, Gloria (Zahringer) Matuszewski, on August 18, 1962, in Laona. They shared 56 years of marriage before her passing on December 20, 2018.
John dedicated his life to his community and to the forests of northern Wisconsin. A logger for his entire career, he proudly owned and operated Northern Timber. He also served his community in leadership roles, including as a longtime member of the Forest County Board and as Town Chairman of Laona. John was an active and committed community volunteer as well-a longtime member of the Laona Lions Club and a dedicated participant in the Forest County ATV Association for many years. His work ethic, fairness, and commitment to the people of Forest County earned him deep respect from all who knew him.
Outside of work, John was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed deer hunting throughout his life and loved snowmobiling in his younger years. His greatest joy came from time spent with family.
John is survived by his children, Lisa (Brian) Retzlaff, Tammy (Mark) DeWitt, John Matuszewski Jr., and son-in-law Wayne Moore; nine grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his siblings: Betty (Frank) Miles, Shirley (Dennis) Penasa, Joan (Don) Treichel, Jane (Mike) Egan, Mary (Bob) Fatla, Jim (Sarah) Matuszewski, Victor (Karen) Matuszewski Jr., and Charles (Wendy) Matuszewski; as well as many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Gloria, his daughter Peggy Moore, and his parents.
A Memorial Mass will be held on December 3, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Leonard Catholic Church in Laona, with Father Anil Polumari presiding. Visitation will take place at the church from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will follow at the Town of Laona Cemetery.
