John F. Mauro "Jack" passed away at the age of 92 on February 14, 2026 at home surrounded by his loving family.
John was born at Nyack Hospital on March 5, 1933, to Louise and Peter Mauro. He graduated from Pearl River High School in 1951. John is a lifelong resident of Rockland County, raised in
Pearl River, NY, and lived in Nanuet, NY for the last 69 years.
John was drafted into the US Army in 1953-1955 during the Korean War and stationed in Trieste, Italy. Following his service, he worked for the Orangetown Highway Department until his retirement in 1990. He also had a part time residential and commercial paving business for several years. In 1990, he was elected as Superintendent of Clarkstown Highway Department and served for 8 years, and continued on as a member of the Superintendent of Highways Association.
During his lifetime, he actively participated in and volunteered his time to many organizations that he held dear to himself and his community. Some of which included serving as the President of the Local 844 CSEA Union, volunteering for the Rockland County United Way, Pearl River Centennial Committee, and the American Legion John H. Secor Post 329, where he served as the Vice Commander (1956) and Post Commander (1957), as well as various other roles and activities. Nanuet Seniors II, he served as Chairperson of the Entertainment Committee for many years, while also enjoying the company of his many friends. John was also a faithful and lifelong parishioner of St. Anthony's Church.
John is survived by the love of his life, his wife Patricia (Ryan), of 69 years. His children Kathy/Kate Mauro, Jane (John) Wetmore of Florida, Patti Mauro of Nanuet, and Dawn Mauro of Nanuet. He is survived by six grandchildren, whom he was so proud of and enjoyed watching them grow into adulthood. Kurtis (Deanna) Pickford, Kerri Pickford (John Dowd), Kraig Pickford, John T. Wetmore, James Wetmore, and Jenny Wetmore. While many of us may not have the time or opportunity to indulge in the joys of what great-grandchildren can bring, John was fortunate to have four beautiful, playful, and entertaining great-grandchildren. They brought him so much joy in his later years, we hope that they will all remember "Pop" and his wonderful and natural ability to revert back to his own playful self. John leaves behind John (20), Theo (10), Jack (5) and Gerard (5), only to be greeted into paradise by his sweet Matilda Louise (deceased). John had many nieces and nephews, present and passed, that he loved. They all know that "Uncle Jack" gave the best hugs. John is preceded by his brothers, Peter J. Mauro and William T. Mauro.
John had a long and fulfilling life spent with family, friends and traveling. He loved spending time in his summer home in Sullivan County playing cards, working on, and perfecting his yard. John was a dedicated, proud, and principled man who always loved God, his family, and his country. John's sense of humor and smile will be most memorable to all. He had a wonderful way of letting you know that he cared with his welcoming arms and warm bear hugs. The time has come for John to lay and rest in God's loving embrace.
