Formerly of Forest Hills, age 101, died befittingly on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11, 2024.
Born on November 26, 1922, to the late John Joseph McCann and the late Mary Jane (Fuge) McCann.
Jack was the beloved husband of the late Rita Jane "Jane" (Vaught) McCann for 62 years.
He was the loving father of John Patrick (Kathleen) McCann of Churchill, Dr. James Edward (Joyce) McCann of Upper Saint Clair, Joseph Allan (Lisa) McCann of Wilkins Twp., Jeffrey Michael (Jacqueline) McCann of CO, and the late infant Jerome McCann.
Jack is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Colleen McCann, Caitlin (Vittorio Viotti) McCann, Carrie (Jason McKoy) McCann, Michael (Rachel) McCann, Laura (Joseph) Otte, Dr. Peter (Laura) McCann, Carly McCann, Joshua McCann and Jacob McCann and 5 great-grandchildren: Alice, Liam, William, Colin and Lucy.
Jack was also preceded in death by his siblings: Joann Sedei, Richard McCann, Paul McCann (who was killed in action during WW II), Donald McCann and Mary Jane Bewak.
Jack was proud to have been born and raised in Johnstown, PA, where he graduated from the former Johnstown Catholic High School. Jack furthered his education by attending the Illinois Institute of Technology and the University of Pittsburgh (Johnstown Campus). He completed his educational journey at the University of Pittsburgh main campus in Pittsburgh, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in accounting. While attending High School, Jack worked for his family's business, McCann's Plumbing and Heating, along with Martin Marietta in Baltimore, MD.
In February of 1943, Jack embarked on a heroic journey serving the United States during WWII as a member of the U.S. Army. Throughout Jack's three years defending his country, he earned numerous awards of valor, including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his bravery in the Battle of Okinawa, and a Presidential Unit Citation for his heroism as a member of the 96th Infantry Division. Jack's service to our country was a testament to his strength and bravery, and will forever be remembered by a grateful nation.
Following Jack's discharge from the Army in 1946, he returned home to Forest Hills, where he and his soul mate, Jane, resided. Jack was employed for the Westinghouse Corporation for 34 years before retiring. He held numerous positions throughout the company, such as controller for the Printing Division in Trafford, staff accountant and payroll specialist at the Westinghouse headquarters, and accountant within the Industry Services Division in Greentree.
Jack retired from Westinghouse, but did not slow down by any means. He held part time positions for the American Red Cross in Pittsburgh, the A&S Carpet Collection in Trafford, as well as volunteer his accounting skills for the Wilkinsburg Elks Lodge, in which he was a devoted member for 25 years. Jack enjoyed the relaxation that a round of golf brought him. He remained an avid golfer at the Meadowink Golf Club until Jane passed, but was always proud to declare that years ago he scored a hole-in-one, and at age 83, he shot an 81 which proves you can score lower than your age! Jack also found pleasure in traveling both domestically and internationally. He forever held close to his heart the trips to Ireland, England, and the those taken with the Churchill AARP club.
Jack's legacy is one of selfless love and service, and while he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Friends are welcome on Friday from 3-7 p.m. at Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 700 Linden Ave. at Cable, East Pittsburgh, PA 15112, (412) 824-8800.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Maurice Church of St. Joseph the Worker Parish.
Jack will be laid to rest with Military Honors in Good Shepherd Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in Jack's name to the Friends of the National World War II Memorial, 921 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, Suite 316, Washington, DC 20003.
