John McDonald Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fred C. Dames Funeral Home and Crematory - Joliet Chapel on Mar. 13, 2026.
Obituary of John W. McDonald

John W. "Jack" McDonald, age 85, passed away peacefully at Lightways Hospice, on Friday, March 13, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 12, 1940, the son of the late James and Catherine McDonald.

As a proud Chicago firefighter, he lived a life defined by courage and service. Whether battling flames on the city's toughest days or offering reassurance to those in crisis, he faced every challenge with strength and humility. His bravery left a lasting mark on the department and the community he protected, and his legacy of selfless service will never be forgotten.

He will be remembered for his quick "Irish" wit. At a young age Jack was a championship Handball player. He was an avid golfer, master of the game and a storyteller at the 19 th hole.

Jack was a devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend. His warmth, loyalty, and generous spirit made him beloved by all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Jack is survived by his loving family members; nephew, Patrick (Sharon) McDonald; niece, Christine (Ron) Urick; nephew, Tom (Andrea) Davis; and numerous dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his loving parents; brother, James (Frances) McDonald; sister, Kathleen (Tom) Davis; niece, Sheree Davis; and nephew, Robert "Rueben" McDonald.

The McDonald family sends a special thank you to Lightways Hospice for their exceptional care of Jack.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions made in Jack's name to Lightways Hospice would be greatly appreciated.

A Memorial Gathering for John W. "Jack" McDonald will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026, at the Fred C.
