John Francis McGovern, Jr. age 76, of Berkley, passed away on March 22, 2025.
John was born in Detroit on August 11, 1948 to John and Phyllis McGovern. He grew up in Grosse Ile and attended the University of Michigan for his undergraduate studies. He then went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School. He spent his law career as a defense attorney, running his own practice that also specialized in estate, wills, and probate law.
Outside of work, John had a love for nature and enjoyed activities like swimming, bird watching, and taking care of his fish tanks. He was also an avid gardener and cook, spending hours tending to his garden and experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen.
John will be remembered as the beloved husband of the late Mary. Loving father of Margaret (Kevin) McDaid, Colleen Fairbanks, Katie (Dustin) Franklin, and Martha Sly. Proud grandfather of Maxwell McDaid, Connor McDaid, Lucas Franklin, and Etta Franklin. Dear brother of Jim (Carey) McGovern, Maureen Bullough, and Kathy (Steve) Miller.
A memorial Mass for John will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. (visitation 9:30 a.m.) at National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica, 2100 W Twelve Mile Rd., Royal Oak. Inurnment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield will take place at a later date.
