John Elwood McKay Jr. (54 years) Fort Worth, Texas: On February 16, 2022, we were heartbroken with the unexpected death of John Elwood McKay, Jr. as a result of injuries sustained during a cycling accident. John had developed a recent love for cycling after receiving a bike on his 50 birthday and had just become a founding member of the Los Hombres Perdidos Cycling Club. Every day was an adventure with John. He loved nothing more than making those around him happy with his lightheartedness and sense of humor. John was also a sports enthusiast and enjoyed cheering for LSU, the Saints, the Cowboys, the Texas Rangers, and most of all his children, Jacob and Carly. No one was louder or prouder than him on the sidelines of their football, baseball, volleyball, or soccer games. Out of all his passions, John's greatest one was his family. Spending time with his family was his favorite pastime-whether it was a family crawfish boil, trips to the beach or Mardi Gras, or a good old-fashioned family game night.
John was born on October 4, 1967, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He spent his youth in Metairie, Louisiana where he loved fishing with his family, he also enjoyed the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, music, playing the drums and cars. He was especially excited when he finally got the engine to turn over in his first car, a Ford Falcon. That was the beginning of his racing days. He attended Rummel High School and participated in the marching band as a percussionist. John shared those talents as a drummer in a punk rock band. John attended Louisiana State University at New Orleans which began his love for LSU. His family relocated to Texas in 1987, and he continued his education at the University of North Texas receiving his bachelor's degree in Production Operations Management.
Upon arriving in Texas, John worked for Atlantic Southeast Airlines and formed some great friendships that led to a blind date with the love of his life, Leslie. After only 6 months of dating, John proposed, and they were married 2 years to the day they met in May of 1993. After graduating from UNT, he went to work for Solo Cup in Dallas (now Dart Container). While he did leave a few times to pursue other careers, he always ended up back there and worked for them for a total of over 20 years.
John was very active as a leader in the Boy Scouts of America where he was able to spend quality time with his son, Jacob, on many campouts-the most memorable being the overnight stay on the U.S.S. Battleship Texas. John actively volunteered at his kids' schools in a variety of ways. He served as a Watch Dog Dad at the elementary school and worked many concessions stands as a member of the Athletic Booster Club at his kids' high school. He was happy and willing to participate in events such as the Turkey Trot and Daddy Daughter Dances with Carly.
John was a loving and caring husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend that would give you anything he had even if it wasn't his to give. He could make you laugh even if you were mad at him. He loved fiercely and deeply, and we will miss him terribly; we will cherish all the memories and look forward to the day we will see him again. We take comfort knowing that he is now surrounded by many loved ones in Heaven.
John is preceded in death by his grandparents, John & Miriam McKay and Oswell & Lilly Lecamu.
He is survived by his loving wife, Leslie McKay; son, Jacob McKay; daughter, Carly McKay; parents, John & Debby McKay, and sister, Kimberly McKay, along with numerous extended family members and countless friends.
A visitation will be held at Brown, Owens & Brumley Family Funeral home on Tuesday, March 8 from 6-8pm.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, March 9 at 10am at The Hills Church in North Richland Hills.

I knew John when I was in high school. Our dads worked at Delta together, and John played drums in a couple of my first bands. He was a cool guy who left a lasting impression on me. I was looking him up after 40 years to rekindle our friendship, only to be broken hearted at this news. Thanks for the lasting good memories John. See you again one day.
