John Carter McMunn, 89, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025. Born in Champaign, Illinois, John met the love of his life, Kay, while attending the University of Illinois.
John earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Illinois and went on to complete his Aerospace Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota. After completing his master’s, he began his career at McDonnell Douglas, and following his doctoral studies, he joined TRW, where he worked as a mechanical and aerospace engineer for more than 30 years.
After adopting their two daughters, Sharon McMunn and Anne Burnett, John and Kay settled in Redlands, California, where they raised their family and were active in their community. John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather to five grandchildren, always putting his family first and providing love, support, and guidance throughout their lives.
A true tinkerer at heart, John enjoyed fixing things and maintaining the apartments he owned, rarely calling anyone else for a repair he could handle himself. He loved birding, traveling, and, in his younger years, bicycling. Whatever he took on, he approached with thoughtful dedication and care.
John was deeply loved by family, friends, and all who knew him. His unwavering devotion, steady presence, and generous spirit leave a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to have known him.
Graveside services will be 11:30AM Saturday November 1, 2025 at Riverside Cemetery 1908 E 3rd St, Sterling, IL 61081, with pastor Anthony Windau of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dixon, officiating.
