John McQueary Obituary

John James McQueary

May 4, 1941 - August 11, 2024

State College, Pennsylvania - John James McQueary, 83, of State College, PA passed away at first light on Sunday, August 11th, 2024 at the Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, PA. He was surrounded by his loved ones who will continue to honor him by living each day to the fullest.

Born May 4, 1941 in Buffalo, NY, John was son of the late Elmer and Mary (Betty) Bulgey McQueary. He was preceded in death by his three sisters, Arlyn, Carolyn and Donnalyn. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Anne Hausrath McQueary.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children. Son, John McQueary and wife Heather of State College, PA, daughter Kelly Clark and husband Joseph of Beaufort, NC, and son Michael McQueary of Reston, VA. and also nine grandchildren.

John was a 1959 graduate of South Park High School in Buffalo, NY. After serving as a Corpsman and medical technologist in the US Navy, John worked as a patient care technician at Duke University later enrolling in the University's Physician Assistant Program. After becoming a PA, he continued to work at Duke and then enrolled at the North Carolina Central University in 1978, earning his degree in Education Administration.

After a successful tenure as the second president of the AAPA (American Association of Physician Assistants) and playing an instrumental role as a pioneer PA he was inducted into Duke University PA Program Alumni Hall of Fame in 2007.

McQueary began his career at Centre Medical and Surgical Associates in State College in 1981. There he held the title of COO and Administrative Director until his retirement in 2013.

A private memorial service, officiated by Rev. Scott Hoffman was held at the State College Presbyterian Church where John served as a Deacon and Elder of the church.

Whether watching John coach countless kids at the little league field or listening to him fondly recount stories from his childhood, John's caring and compassionate nature will continue to fill the hearts of his many colleagues, friends and family members. He was a big man with an even bigger heart. He will be missed by many but will continue to inspire them to live each day with his motto in mind, where every day is a great day.

For those wishing to offer their sympathy, memorial contributions can be made in memory of John to the State College Presbyterian Church, 132 W Beaver Ave. State College, PA 16801

I went to the SCAHS with Mike. We were in choir together. I lost my own father back in May of 2021. I think losing your dad is one of the hardest things we go through in life. I wanted to write to wish everyone peace and comfort at this time. I love penguins, so I add a picture of a peaceful baby emperor penguin in Mike's dad's memory as well. I wish deepest condolences to all.

Dear Anne,
We were so sorry to read of John's passing in the CDT. May your abundant warm memories of John soon fill your pain with laughter. We remember attending a hospital benefit when the Macarena dance became popular. We have a great memory of John attempting to teach the dance steps to those of us with two left feet. We still laugh out loud when we hear that song.
Love, prayers and hugs to you and your entire family!!!

and grew consider them all as friends.
"Big John's" laugh and smile will never be forgotten.

John and I go back 52 yrs to the Duke PA program. We enjoyed Duke sports together with a party whenever possible. We also shared beach houses at Emerald Isle, NC and the memories are dearly cherished. He was a good man, loved his family and friends beyond. Measure!
"Take it to the limit one more time, John!"
Love you friend,
