John Mele Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Browning-Forshay Funeral Home - Hawthorne on Jan. 5, 2026.
Mele, Sr., John Jacob, age 78, of Franklin Lakes, on Friday, January 2, 2026. Born in Paterson and raised in Hawthorne, John had lived in Franklin Lakes for more than 35 years. John attended and graduated from Boston University, majoring in accounting. John was a lifelong entrepreneur whose work ethic began at a young age in his father's market. From those early days, he learned the value of hard work, perseverance, and taking pride in serving others. Driven by ambition and vision, John went on to build a business of his own, purchasing The Tides Estate at just 30 years old. For more than 45 years, he dedicated himself to growing and running The Tides, creating not just a successful business, but a place filled with warmth, hospitality, and lasting memories.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was deeply passionate about cooking, a talent he shared generously with those he loved. Above all, he cherished his family and found his greatest joy in time spent together, embracing life with enthusiasm, laughter, and love.
John is the beloved husband of Bridget Mele (nee: Riccardi). Loving father of Nicholas Mele of Pennsylvania, David Mele and his wife Samantha of West Milford, and Melanie Searls and her husband Franklin of South Carolina. Dear grandfather of Finley, Wesley, Jacob, Benjamin, Penelope, and Charlotte. John is survived by his older siblings, Florence Backus, Joseph Mele, Dominic Mele and their families. John also leaves behind his three loving dogs, Giacomo, Gino, and Josie.
All funeral services will be private to the family.
