John V. Merriner, 84, passed away on January 6, 2026, at Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury Life Care Community. John was born in
Winchester, Virginia, the son of the late James Henry Merriner and Katharine Baylis Merriner.
John graduated from John Handley High School in 1960 where he served as class president. His college education was at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, where he obtained a BA in psychology in 1964. He followed up with graduate studies at North Carolina State University earning an MS and PhD in zoology in 1969 and 1973.
John began employment at Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences (VIMS) in the anadromous fish program becoming a Senior Marine Scientist and Ichthyology Department Head. While at VIMS, he was an Associate Professor of Marine Science of the college of William and Mary and the University of Virginia.
John's voracious appetite for all things "fishy" is reflected in the diversity of research programs undertaken by his graduate students. He was a quiet mentor who led by example.
In Federal service in 1983, John became Chief of the NOAA Fisheries branch at the Beaufort, North Carolina laboratory, overseeing research programs in Atlantic and Gulf menhaden, coastal pelagic and reef fisheries. Concentration was also on the translation and communication of fisheries scientists to fisheries management via reports to Management Councils and Commissions. He also served as Scientific Editor for "Fisheries Bulletin" from 1998 to 2002.
Professional memberships were American Fisheries Society, American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, American Institute of Fisheries Research Biologists, and Southeast Estuaries Research Society.
John promoted education and advancement of women and minorities in fisheries professions. He received the NOAA Equal Employment Opportunity Person of the Year award in 1999. In 2007, John was conferred the Atlantic State Marine Fisheries Commission Award for Excellence in Scientific, Technical, and Advisory contributions. John wasn't all work, he enjoyed wood turning, gardening, baking, and fish grilling, and, of course, saltwater fishing in the Beaufort North Carolina Area.
John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nancy F. Merriner, a son, Mark B. Merriner, his sister, Hallie M. Place (Ron), sister-in-law, Jo Ann F. Hill (Dale), and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by brother James H. Merriner, Jr. (Sue) and sister Peg M. Emmart.
The family is most appreciative of the excellent care and compassion provided to John by the Staff of Westminster Canterbury.
