John R. "Jack" Mertes, age 86, beloved author, classic film enthusiast, and lifelong lover of literature, passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2025 at Carle Methodist Hospital.

Known for his sharp wit, thoughtful spirit, and deep appreciation for storytelling in all its forms, Jack leaves behind a legacy of words, wisdom, and warmth. He was born November 6, 1938 in Peoria, the only son to John R. and Minnie (Pabst) Mertes.

A prolific writer, Jack authored numerous books over the course of his life, each reflecting his keen insight into the human experience and his love of language. Jack had a deep passion for cinema, especially classic films. One of his all-time favorites was Gone With the Wind, which he returned to time and again for its sweeping narrative and unforgettable characters. He could often be found watching golden-age Hollywood films on the TMC Channel.

Equally passionate about music, Jack had a soft spot for the tunes of the 1950s and 60s, that era's soundtrack accompanied many of his most joyful moments. He was avid reader with an insatiable curiosity, Jack never stopped seeking new stories to explore. Whether it was a well-worn classic or a newly discovered gem, he devoured books with enthusiasm and a genuine love for the written word.

Jack will be remembered not only for his creative talents, but for the kindness he showed to everyone around him, his engaging conversations, and his unwavering appreciation for the arts. He lived a life fueled by imagination, nostalgia, and heart - a life that inspired many and will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepsister and brother-in-law.

Graveside services will be held at Swan Lake Memory Gardens on Wednesday, October 1, 2025 at 11:00 AM where Jack will be laid to rest by his beloved mother Minnie.

A lifelong friend has left this earth! I am sad and missing him already. I net Jack in the summer of 1956 when he had just graduated from high school and had his first job at the Peoria Public Library. I was volunteering and almost a freshman. We had glorious times together - dancing at the Club Peoria, swimming at Twin Lakes, driving around town in his red Pontiac convertible. Thru the years, time passed us by but we remained close friends - facing some tough times but many good ones. Hard to say goodbye - YOUR BOOKS WILL LIVE ON FOREVER as will my memories.
