Cpt. (USN, ret.) John Arlen Morehead, 87, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2023. He was born on September 21, 1935 in Evanston, Illinois to parents William J. Morehead and Velma M. (Cohoe) Morehead.
A graduate of Hinsdale High School (Illinois), Jack graduated from DePauw University (Indiana), class of 1957. After DePauw, Jack enlisted and began his illustrious military career in the United States Navy. From tours aboard ships in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans as well as South Vietnam to transfers across the United States, Jack dedicated his life to the Navy. On October 10, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois, John married the love of his life, Janet Hieronimus Morehead. They spent a loving and dedicated 63 years of marriage sharing their love of country as well as adventures around the world.
Jack retired as a Captain after 24 years at Great Lakes Naval Base in 1981. “Capt Jack” was forever active in many local and international civic service groups including the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine and the Service Club of Indianapolis. He served as Club President and District Governor for Rotary International.
Jack will be dearly missed by his children, Scott Morehead of Indianapolis, Christopher (Katie) Morehead of Vernon Hills, Illinois and Sarah (Steve) Combs of Indianapolis; 7 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson and his sister, Lynne (Chuck) Armstrong, Seattle, Washington.
He was proceeded in death by his devoted wife, Janet (7/7/23). They are together again!
A processional line up will begin at 12:30pm for a graveside service which will be held for both Jack and Jan at 1pm, Saturday, September 23rd at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46229) followed by a memorial gathering at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor should be made to The Rotary Foundation, One Rotary Center, 1560 Sherman Avenue, Evanston, IL 60201-3698.
