John Hunter Morgan II, age 77, of New Haven, CT, passed away at his home on Thursday, August 8, 2024. Born September 11, 1946, in Hartford, CT, he grew up in Newington, CT. John was the son of the late Mary Woolley Morgan and the late Edward Hunter Morgan and stepson of the late Shirley Marsh Morgan. He is survived by his nephew David William Jorgensen (Marta Ameri); niece Karin Lynn J. Stoermer (Scott); grandniece Morgan Mae Stoermer; and many other members of his extended family. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his sister, Marilyn Morgan Jorgensen.
John was a member of Yale College Class of 1968. He majored in history and musicology, and he received his M.Phil. from Yale in musicology. Between 1972 and 2013, he served as organist for St. John's Episcopal Church and St. Boniface Church, both in New Haven. Because he occasionally filled in for other organists, John enjoyed the privilege of playing many of the city's most important instruments. In addition, John was a chorister in many of New Haven's choirs, including Christ Church (Episcopal), St. Mary's Church, and the St. Gregory Society Schola.
During the 1970s, John was a music critic for the New Haven Register. And, from 1973 to 2013, he was a library assistant in Yale's Geology Library. During this period, he was an active and loyal member of UNITE HERE Local 34, the union of clerical and technical employees at Yale.
John had an enormous number of interests. He was particularly interested in the history and evolution of New Haven and Wooster Square. He was a lifetime member of the Mory's Association, and during the 1980s, he served as House Chairman of the Yale Elizabethan Club. Over many years, John collected antique furniture, musical instruments, and art. His travels took him to Ireland, Italy, the western United States, and the Canadian Maritimes. Through his studies and experience, John developed a wide knowledge of the world around him, including ecclesiastical history, German opera, the English royals, and cooking. As an animal lover, John shared his home with cats and dogs that he cared for and cherished.
John made many long-term friends during his lifetime. He loved entertaining and was a funny and generous dinner companion. He often enjoyed time sharing food, drink, stories, and laughter. These qualities explain why so many were drawn to him; his life was important to many.
At John's request, there will be no calling hours or service. Interment will be private at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, CT. Memorial contributions in John's name may be made to an animal rescue organization or other charity of your choice.
