JOHN MOUNT Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rost Funeral Home on Feb. 20, 2026.
John Victor Mount

Just about mid-winter, a beloved, mule named Reba decided it was time to head out to better pastures. Not long after, Reba's best-loved pal, John Victor Mount, did the same.

John, along with his twin sister, Rebecca Mount Caldwell, arrived January 17, 1950, to Maria Ruth and John F. Mount in San Jose, California. The playpen was soon crowded with sisters Mary, Suzy and brother Richard.

One high school summer, John kissed his mom goodbye and, with $100 in his pocket, bicycled by himself from Denver to Columbus, Ohio-1,300 miles- where his family was waiting. Later, his path led him north to the University of Idaho. There he met Janie Hansen, a lively and fun Home Economics student who made him a good supper. He decided she was perfect, and they were married in 1976.

That's when the real fun began!

They settled in Payette, Idaho, where they taught just down the hall from each other at the High School. Years later, this proximity made for some uncomfortable moments for their four kids: Susan (Clayton) Paddie, Kathryn (Rick) Sorenson, Andy (Stacie) Mount, and Sara (Alex) Scarangella. Their home was a small farm filled with 4-H projects-horses, steers and pigs. The memories created there will last for generations.

John was a committed and loved Math teacher for 30 years at Payette High School. In the summers, John spent hours in the Driver's Ed car, patiently reminding new Payette drivers to use the turn signals. In retirement, he and Janie filled their days riding horses along trails in Idaho and Oregon, learning Spanish, re-building a Model A Ford truck, working in the garden, and traveling the world. He enjoyed his volunteer tutor work at the Treasure Valley Community College and Payette School's math labs. His greatest joy, though, was being Grampa to their nine grandkids, each of whom brought immense pride and happiness.

John was a loving, capable, kind, and endlessly supportive husband and dad who will be deeply missed and forever carried in our hearts.

The funeral will be held Monday, the 23rd, at 11:00 at the United Methodist Church in Payette.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Pride of the 208 Scholarship, a scholarship supporting Payette students-a cause John cared deeply about. Donations can be made at: https://pride208.com/
