John Edward Mumm

John Edward Mumm, age 78, passed away September 7, 2025, at The Sanctuary at St. Cloud, MN.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30 AM Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (810 S. Cedar Ave, Owatonna, MN). Friends may greet the family at the church starting at 10:15 AM. There will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary recited at 10:00 AM before the visitation. Military Honors will be provided by the Steele County Funeral Unit.

John was born to parents Joseph and Margaret (Kallas) Mumm in Bertha, MN. He grew up on a farm near Staples, MN, where he spent a lot of time outdoors with his siblings, helping with farm chores and the family garden. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and Staples High School.

He enlisted in the United States Army, and after, spent some time working on the family farm. He worked for FMC, Scorpion, managed several turkey farms for many years, and was a truck driver. His last and most fulfilling job was delivering meals to seniors in Owatonna.

John married Dorothea Wilson in 1974. They had two children, Sara and Shane, and later divorced. In 2003, he married Darlene Meyer and the two made their home in Owatonna.

John's faith was important to him, and he and Darlene attended services together on Sundays in person when they could and online when they moved to The Sanctuary. John was also a proud Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

John will be remembered by his family and friends as a kind man who loved spending time with his family, gardening, and painting. We will remember how he loved taking his dog, Daisy, for daily walks, and how moving to assisted living with Darlene sparked a love of baking cookies, coloring, eating ice cream, and playing Bingo. John's family would like to thank the residents and staff at The Sanctuary at St. Cloud, as well as staff at Moments Hospice for providing love, care and support to John the past couple of years.

John is survived by children, Sara (Randy) Mumm-Frehse, Hinckley, MN, and Shane (Bobbi) Mumm of Crosby, MN; stepchildren: Wendy Paul of Frederick, CO, David (Gloria) Meyer of Hudson, WI, Darin (Gwen) Meyer of Bemidji, MN, and Waneta (Kip) Perkins of St. Cloud, MN; siblings: Bernard (Gloria) Mumm, Staples, MN, Teresa (Walt) Peterson, Lindstrom, MN, JoAnn (Wayne) Lenk, Browerville, MN, Rose (Don) Weber, Perham, MN, and Larry Mumm, South Dakota; brother-in-law, Jack Bristlin; sister in law,Loretta (Dave) Cordes of Kenyon; grandchildren: Tawna Duke, Aviana Mumm, Anastasia Mumm, Jesse Mumm and Azalea Mumm; great-grandchildren: Jentai Otremba, Kyan Otremba, Easton Stiner and Callahan Mumm; step-grandchildren: Jacob Otremba, Kalee Paul, Zachary Paul, Melanie Paul, Isabelle (Phillip) Petrie, Emily Meyer, Gannon Strain, Connor Strain, Keelan Perkins, and Hannah Perkins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene, parents Joseph and Margaret Mumm, stepfather, Lawrence Mumm, sister, Marie Bristlin, and step son-in-law, Kody Paul.
