John Murray Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center on Feb. 25, 2026.
With both heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we share the peaceful passing of John (Jack) T. Murray, 85, of Simsbury, CT on Sunday, February 22, 2026, surrounded by his beloved wife of 60 years, Maureen (Kavanagh), and the family he cherished.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, to George A. and Mary (Gorman) Murray, Jack spent most of his life on Long Island, where his upbringing shaped his strong work ethic, fierce loyalty, quick wit, and the steady, dependable way he cared for the people he loved.

Jack began his banking career in 1960 and soon paused to serve in the United States Army, reflecting his sense of duty and commitment to something larger than himself. He returned to banking at the Bank of Rockville Centre, which later became part of JP Morgan Chase, and retired in 2004 as Vice President of Middle Market Lending. He loved telling stories from his career, including his involvement with the world's first ATM. The friendships he built lasted decades, continuing long after retirement at his treasured Monday morning breakfast club.

Jack truly embraced life. He loved being outdoors - golfing, fishing in Montauk, and spending time on the beaches of eastern Long Island. In retirement, he and Maureen made their camper their second home, with Maureen happily serving as co-pilot on countless adventures. Whether traveling the world or sitting quietly by the water, Jack found joy in nature and in being present.

Nothing brought him greater pride than his family. He was a constant at his grandchildren's activities - cheering loudly, smiling proudly, and offering steady encouragement. At home, he delighted in life's simple pleasures: a good meal with a sweet to follow, a perfectly timed joke, and long conversations filled with stories and laughter.

Jack will be remembered for his humor, his unwavering loyalty, his calm presence, and his gift for storytelling. He had a way of making people feel steady and supported simply by being there.

His legacy lives on through his loving family; his wife, Maureen; his daughter, Laura Roche and her husband Ken of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his two sons, John Jr. and his wife Phuong of Avon, CT, and Michael and his wife Emily of Bethesda, MD; his seven grandchildren, Connor, Amber, Jack, Kyle, Sean, Elizabeth "Libby", and Ryan; and his sister Kathleen Keenan and her husband Paul of Exeter, NH. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, George A. Murray, Jr. and Thomas Murray.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 1 from 2-4 PM at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center of Avon, 301 Country Club Road, Avon. Military Honors will be rendered at 4 PM.

A Funeral Mass to honor and celebrate Jack's life will be held on Monday, March 2 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Church, 942 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, CT.
