John Raymond Noppenberg, 83, a beloved, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on January 18, 2025, at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, holding the hand of his devoted wife of 65 years and surrounded by his family and grandchildren. He was born on October 1, 1941, in Miami, Florida to the late Raymond Joseph and Marian (Nixon) Noppenberg.
John’s family moved to Menominee, MI when he was a small child, and after graduation in 1959 he married his high school sweetheart Marlene (Hornick). He began working for Holland Motor Express in Muskegon, MI in 1960 after graduating from trade school. He worked his way up to terminal manager, and in 1976 the family moved to South Bend, IN, where he spent the next 24 years before retiring in 2000.
John had a flair for woodworking, creating pieces that not only adorned his home but also served as cherished gifts to friends and family. Retirement didn’t last long as his skills were put to use in the Scene Shop at Penn High School in 2001, and a 25 year second career began. John worked in several areas of the school where he made many friends and touched the lives of countless students until present day.
John devoted his life to his family and career, and he was loved by all who knew him. To say John was a proud parent is an understatement. Supporting his children, and later his grandchildren, in their endeavors was a source of great pride for him. Together with his beloved wife they were in attendance at every event possible. It was through his unwavering support that some of his best and longest lasting friendships were made. John's face always lit up with joy when surrounded by family; he found immense happiness in being a grandparent, sharing his passions and wisdom.
John is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Marlene, who stood by his side through every joy and challenge. John’s children—Wendy (David) Wendroff, Aaron (Krystal) Noppenberg, and Amy (Michael) Gallo; and his grandchildren, Carter Gallo, Brady Gallo, Ava Gallo, and Lola Hettrich; sister, Nancy Noppenberg; and brother, Peter Noppenberg.
John was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Patrick and Michael Noppenberg. As we celebrate John’s life, we reflect on the love he spread so generously, the laughter that accompanied his stories, and the strength he provided in every moment. His legacy of love will forever remain a guiding light for all who were fortunate enough to know him.
