WORCESTER-John P. O’Malley, 86, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 25 with his family by his side.

He leaves his wife of nearly 60 years, Kathleen P. (O’Donoghue) O’Malley; five children, John F. O’Malley and his wife Maureen of Charlton, Anne Marie Coulson and her husband Wayne of Charlton, Michael P. O’Malley and his wife Marisa of Newton, Vera E. Dugan and her husband Jonathan of Charlton; Gerard A. O’Malley and his wife Kelly of Holden; two brothers Austin O’Malley and his wife, Mary of Quincy and Gerard O’Malley and his wife Margaret of Dooghmakeon County Mayo, Ireland; a sister Mary Joyce of Marshfield; ten grandchildren, Kendra, Morgan, Ryan, Evan, Steven, Christopher, Aidan, Rose, Grace, and Maeve, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers Tommy and Seamus, a brother in law, John Joyce, and an infant grandson Owen. John was born in Louisburgh, County Mayo, Ireland son of Anthony and Sarah (McGreal) O’Malley.

John left his beloved home country of Ireland in his late teens and spent two years in England before immigrating to the United States in 1958. Dorchester, MA was his first home. While there, he worked at Boston College in the athletics department and continued to be a die hard BC sports fan throughout his life. Upon meeting Kathleen, he relocated to Worcester, MA. where they would settle and raise their family. John spent 42 years employed by St. Vincent’s Hospital as chief custodian at St.Luke’s Hall. He took much pride in maintaining both the inside and outside of the building and grounds. He enjoyed listening to traditional Irish music and dancing. In his younger years, he liked to play Irish football in Somerville and handball at Green Hill Park. John was also an avid fan of all New England sports teams. His favorite teams and sports to cheer for, however, were whichever ones his children and grandchildren were on. He was active as a coach and a volunteer. Most recently, he enjoyed family trips to Polar Park to watch the WooSox. His smile was biggest and the Irish twinkle in his eye was brightest when he was surrounded by his family. Their days will never be the same without his expert storytelling and witty one liners. He was the proudest Dad and Pa around.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Millbury Care One and Ascend Hospice of Worcester, for their loving care and support during the last few months of his declining health.
