John Herman Ortgies

John Herman Ortgies, 91, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2025. Born on November 8, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY, to the late John Francis and Louise (Mangels) Ortgies. The Ortgies family moved to Cobleskill, NY, where John graduated from high school in 1955.
John's journey through life was marked by his commitment to his family and his work. After high school, he worked in banking but soon joined the family deli business, a decision that would lead him to meet his soulmate, the former, Frances Lillian Girardot. The two married in 1957, and shortly after, John proudly entered the United States Army. He returned home not only as a veteran but also as a father, ready to embark on the next chapter of his life.
Together with Frances, John poured his heart into the family business until the decision was made to sell. He then joined the Golub Corporation, where he dedicated over two decades before retiring in the early 1990s. Retirement did not slow John down; instead, it provided him with the opportunity to indulge in his passions and spend time with his loved ones.
An avid Yankees and Giants Football fan, John's enthusiasm for his teams was infectious. His hobbies extended far beyond the bleachers; he was an outdoorsman who relished every chance to go fishing, hunting, and especially golfing. John was also a talented handyman, a trait that endeared him to his family as he crafted swing sets and sandboxes that became the cornerstone of countless childhood memories for his grandchildren. Family gatherings were a highlight for John, particularly the pool parties hosted at his home.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Frances Lillian Ortgies, his loving children Diane (Ortgies) Tomaro (Tony), daughter Karen Ortgies, and daughter-in-law Kathy Ortgies. Grandchildren Kimberly Hermann (Robert), Anthony Tomaro(Rachael), Gregory Tomaro, Brian Martin, Tamara Ortgies, Jenny Stedman(Justin) and John Ortgies Jr. and 9 great granddaughters. His brother Harry Ortgies, a sister-in-law Jackie Ortgies and a sister-in-law Mary Lou Clink. Plus several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his son John Ortgies and his brother Fred Ortgies and his sister-in-law Jackie Ortgies.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, December 20th, from 10 AM to 11 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11 AM.
