John Leonard Ortino, 62, of Alabaster, AL, passed away on January 8, 2026.
Born March 31, 1963, in Hollywood, Florida, John lived a life connected to nature, family, and falconry. A longtime resident of Alabaster, he left a legacy of adventure, deep love for the outdoors, determined spirit, and an infectious sense of humor that brightened those around him.
Known for his quick wit and dry humor, John brought laughter and joy wherever he went - whether sharing a hunting story or a lighthearted observation. His funny, easygoing nature made him a beloved father, grandfather, and friend.
He found his truest peace in Alabama's outdoors. With his beloved Red-Tailed Hawk, Pepe, he hunted & explored, sharing an unbreakable bond of trust, skill, & mutual respect. His North American Kestrel, Einstein, held a tender place in his heart -a cherished companion whose quiet presence brought him profound joy.
John was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Frances & Don M. Ortino, Jr.; his stepmother, Ann Ortino; his wife, Lorraine Ortino; his brother, William R. Ortino; & his granddaughter, Ella Kate Vann.
He is survived by daughters, Jamie Vann (Brett) of Helena, AL, & Angela Ortino (Stuart) of Montevallo, AL; grandchildren, Dakota Vann & Emerson Vann; siblings, Don M. Ortino, Ill (Audrey) of Pickens, SC, Susan Knight of Easley, SC, & Donna Davis (Ted) of Pembroke Pines, FL; his companion, Jennifer Higgins; & many other loving family members and friends who will forever miss his generous spirit, hilarious stories, & tales from the hunt.
John's love for his family, the natural world, and bringing smiles to others will live on through the cherished memories he created and the abundant laughter he shared.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Alabama Wildlife Center, 100 Terrace Drive, Pelham, AL 35124, in John's honor.
