John Penner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Manchester Funeral Home on Mar. 17, 2026.
John Graden Penner, affectionately known by friends as "Big John" and family as "Johnny," passed away on March 14, 2026. Born on December 18, 1969, in Oklahoma City, Johnny spent his early years in Oklahoma before moving with his family to Tennessee in February 1987.

A man of quiet strength and deep privacy, Johnny was someone who kept his thoughts close to his heart. However, those who knew him best understood his passions-most notably his lifelong fascination with dragons. Whether it was the dragon-adorned wallet he carried daily or the various items he collected over the years, the mythical creatures were a constant symbol of the things he loved.

Johnny was a determined individual who valued education on his own terms; though he left high school early, he later took the initiative to return and earn his GED. Throughout his professional life, he was a hard worker, spending several years at the cheese factory in Manchester before transitioning to Amazon. He remained with Amazon for a couple of years until physical health challenges with his feet necessitated a change.

He is survived by his mother, Mildred Armstrong; his brothers, Steven Moss and Andrew Armstrong; and his niece, Ashley Moss. He also leaves behind his special friend, Josh, along with many neighbors and friends who valued his presence in their lives. He was preceded in death by his father, Tyrone Armstrong.

To honor his life, his dear friends in the neighborhood will host a special cookout and memorial gathering later this summer. This informal celebration will be a time for those who knew Johnny to share the stories he might have been too private to tell himself.

Anyone wishing to share special memories, stories, or information regarding Johnny is encouraged to reach out to his brother, Steven.

Manchester Funeral Home is honored to assist the family during this difficult time.
