In Loving Memory of John Richard Pike
Decorated Vietnam Veteran and GBI Agent
June 5, 1947 – April 6, 2025
It is with deep respect and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Richard Pike, who died peacefully in his sleep on April 6, 2025. A proud Vietnam veteran, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and lifelong public servant, John lived a life defined by courage, honor, and love.
From 1967 to 1968, John served in the United States Army as a member of the 1st Cavalry Division (1st/8th CAV "Jumping Mustangs"). While serving in Vietnam, he was awarded both the Bronze Star for heroic and meritorious achievement and the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat-testaments to his bravery and sacrifice in service to his country.
After returning home from war, John began a new chapter. He married Mary Ellen "Hobbs" Pike and soon after embarked on a long and distinguished career with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. His work with the GBI reflected the same values he carried in uniform-integrity, determination, and an unwavering commitment to justice.
Family was the true heart of John's life. He is survived by his son, Bryan Pike (Ginny) from Flowery Branch, GA, and daughter, Heather Pike from Thomasville, GA; 4 grandchildren who adored him: Hayden and Bryson Pike from Flowery Branch, GA and Taylor Letchworth (Thomasville, GA) and Charlie Letchworth (Billings, MT); and one great-grandchild (Callan Letchworth) who all brought him immense joy. To them, he was more than a war hero or a "Special Agent in Charge" - he was "Dad," "Pa," "Grampy" and a constant source of love, wisdom, and strength.
Additional survivors include Mary Ellen "Hobbs" Pike (Thomasville, GA), Laura "Steptoe" Pike (Thomasville, GA), his nephew Jeff Pike (Annalyn) from Welch, WV and great-nephew EJ Pike from Welch, WV.
He was preceded in death by his Father, John T. Pike; Mother, Mary Louise Pike; Brother, Jeffrey L. Pike; Grandson, John Taylor Pike and Great-Granddaughter, Emersyn Hufstetler.
A service with military honors will be held to celebrate his life and service.
John lived a life defined by courage, compassion, quiet sacrifice, and an enduring sense of duty. He was a man who walked through fire and came home to build a life rooted in faith in Jesus Christ, love and service. His legacy will live on in the stories told, the values passed down, and the lives he touched.
His favorite verse in the Bible was John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends".
Funeral Services will be held at Thomasville First Baptist Church on Saturday - April 12, 2025 at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at First Baptist.
