John Pins Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory on Mar. 16, 2026.
John J. Pins, 88, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on March 13, 2026, at UnityPoint Finley Hospital in Dubuque.

Private family services will be held. Burial will take place at a later date at Dubuque Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family.

John was born on July 13, 1937, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Joseph W. and Martha May (Greenwood) Pins. He attended Dubuque Senior High School before enlisting in the military. John honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957. He was united in marriage to Carol Hemmer in Dubuque.

John worked at the Dubuque Packing House. He was an avid golfer and, if he wasn't out on the green swinging his clubs, he could often be found in retirement mowing the greens at Lacoma Golf Club in East Dubuque. John was a dedicated member of the Leaky Lodge at the Dubuque Moose Club and was a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan.

John is survived by his children, Jeffrey (Michele) Pins, Connie Pins, Michael (Joanna Struthers) Pins, and Debra Zach; and his grandchildren, Corinne (Alex Wesenberg) Oertel, Alex (Laura Yeradi) Pins, Erin Pins, Lauren (Aly Badran) Oertel, and Joshua Zach.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Pins; his parents, Joseph and Martha Pins; his brother, Wayne Pins; and his sister, Eileen Noel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's honor to the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of the Rose, Hawkeye Care Center, UnityPoint Finley Hospital, and Hospice of Dubuque for their care and compassion.
