John A. Pizzo Sr
Rome - John A. Pizzo Sr., 86, of Rome passed away Thursday, August 28, 2025 in University Hospital.
He was born in Frankfort, New York on September 8, 1938, the son of the late Peter and Jennie Bommarito Pizzo Sr He attended Frankfort and later Mohawk schools and graduated from Mohawk High School with the class of 1955. Following his graduation, John enlisted in the US Air Force and was Honorably Discharged on December 12, 1960 with the rank of Airman Second Class. He was married to Brenda Brockett on October 7, 1989 in Utica, NY. He was later recalled for Desert Shield/Desert Storm serving with the US Air Force and was Honorably Discharged on June 9, 1991 with the rank of Master Sergeant. John was employed as a Supervisor in the Maintenance Department for Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome until retirement in 1996. Following his retirement the couple relocated to Albany Ga. And returned to the area in 2018. John was a member of American Legion Post 1794 and it's Riders Chapter, Lee Center, Past Grand Chef Georgia's 40 & 8, Voiture Locale 92 NY Correspondent as well as other organizations such as Rome Moose Club, Rome Elks Lodge, Camden Rod and Gun Club, Rome Polish Club, NRA, Retired USAF Master Sergeant Association and served as Past Commander of American Legion Department of Georgia. He was known to always have a joke or two. His association with the 40&8 went above and beyond just being a member, their goal was always to help the less fortunate and he especially loved to drive the train in parades.
John is survived by wife, Brenda Pizzo of Rome; one son and daughter in law, John and Polly Pizzo Jr of Newbury OH; three daughters and one son in law, Nicki and Tom Bailey of Ilion NY, Michele McCann of Mohawk NY and Jodi Rae Pizzo of Deerfield NY; one brother and sister in law, Francis and Mary Pizzo of Mesa AZ; his grandchildren, Joseph Pizzo, Heather and her husband, Josh English, Dalton McCann and Kash Bailey; his great grandchildren, Chloee English, Charlee English and Clyde Mccann; his step children, Marie Militello, Joseph Militello and Thomas and his wife, Aylssa Militello; step grandson, Samuel Militello and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one brother, Peter Sonny Pizzo Jr on January 12, 1978 and his grandson, Kyle Everson on June 3, 2024.
His funeral will be held Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at 6:00 PM in the V. J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc., 203 Second Ave. Frankfort where a funeral service will be celebrated by the Deacon James Bower. Interment will be in Mt Olivet Cemetery on Wednesday, September 10, 2025 at 11:00. Calling hours will be Tuesday, September 9 from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM at the V. J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc. 203 Second Ave., Frankfort.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's memory may be made to American Heart Association 7272 Greenville Ave. Dallas, TX 75231 as well as American Legion 9025 Veterans Memorial Hwy, Lee Center, NY 13363. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
