John V. Ponterio, age 92, of Mahwah, died Tuesday, October 14, 2025. He was born on February 13, 1933 in Staten Island, NY where he lived until moving to Franklin Lakes in 2003 and then
finally to Mahwah in 2020. He was a parishioner and daily communicant of St. Paul's Church in Ramsey, NJ.
John enlisted in the Air Force and served from 1952 to 1956. After being honorably discharged, John obtained a BS in electrical engineering and then a master's in operations research. John worked for Western Electric, Bell Labs and then for Mobil Oil Corporation until he retired in 1992. John is predeceased by his wife and love of his life for 61 years, Catherine (nee Perreca).
He is survived by his children Anthony and wife Laura of New Egypt, NJ, Ralph and his wife Elizabeth of Staten Island, NY, Catherine Ponterio of Mahwah, NJ and John and his wife Caroline of Scotch Plains, NJ. Also surviving are his nine grandchildren, Michael, Anthony (Kensy), Michelle (Jonathan), Nicholas (Sarah), Michael, Steven (Amanda), Matthew, Stephanie and Grace and his seven great grandchildren, Daniel, Olivia, Avery, Natalie, Jack, Julie and Michael. He loved them all with all his heart.
Visiting, Sunday 2-6 pm at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Ave. Wyckoff, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday 10:00 am at St. Paul's RC Church, 200 Wyckoff Ave. Ramsey, NJ. Interment will take place in St. Peter's Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations to either Tunnel to Towers Foundation or Deborah Foundation (links below), would be appreciated.
