Celebrating the Life of a Devoted Family Man and Lifelong Learner
John W. Popp, born October 31, 1945, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, leaving behind a legacy rich in curiosity, kindness, and craftsmanship. He was 79 years old.
John's life was defined by a boundless appetite for knowledge and a remarkable ability to find joy in the simple pleasures. A voracious reader, he devoured books of all kinds, always eager to expand his mind and learn more about new and old topics. His love for music knew few boundaries-John delighted in the discovery of new sounds and melodies, appreciating genres from classical to blues, gospel to rock, and everything in between.
Those who knew John could always count on him to be working with his hands. Whether he was immersed in woodworking projects, baking new recipes for his family, or tinkering with small-engines, he found satisfaction in making and mending. To John, every broken thing was an opportunity-a puzzle waiting to be solved with patience and ingenuity. His life's workshop was a place of creativity and care, filled with the scent of sawdust, the warmth of the oven, and the hum of possibility.
John's greatest pride was his family, whom he cherished deeply. He shared more than 53 years of devoted marriage with his beloved wife, Shirley. Together, they built a home filled with laughter, love, and the comforting aroma of John's latest baking endeavor. He is survived by his children, who each carry forward his spirit of curiosity and resilience: Jeffrey and his wife Lisa of Beloit, Amy and her husband Steven of Madison, Eric and his wife Katia of Minneapolis and his sister Phyllis and her husband Gordon of Muscoda as well as several nieces and nephews.
John was a treasured grandpa to all of his grandchildren: Reagan, with her husband Nathan Davis; Storm Williams; Jacob Popp; and Matthew, Allison, and Olivia Popp. His wisdom, humor, and gentle guidance will be felt by his family for generations to come.
Friends and family will remember John's kindness, his steadfast presence, and his ability to see the wonder in the world-be it in a well-worn novel, a perfect loaf of bread, or a song drifting through the air. He leaves behind a lasting example of lifelong learning, quiet generosity, and inventive spirit.
Visitation will be at the Pratt Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, July 16 from 4:30 -7pm and a celebration of John's life will be held on July 17 at Sugar Grove Church of Christ at 10:30am with visitation beginning at 9:30 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Sylvan Cemetery Association, Sugar Grove Church of Christ, or a charity of choice.
He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.
