John Larry Potocnik

John Larry Potocnik, of Cherokee, died on January 22, 2026 surrounded by his family. He was 81 years old.

Born on the family farm near West Mineral on October 7, 1944 to John and Lena (Kotnek) Potocnik, John Larry was the youngest of three. For many years he worked side by side with his father before taking over the farming operation. He was proud to be a farmer, and he loved working the land. He also enjoyed bailing hay for area farmers. As recently as last year he was driving his tractor in the hay fields.

John attended school in both West Mineral and Cherokee, and he was a member of the first graduating class at Southeast High School in 1962. He attended Pittsburg State University and earned an undergraduate degree in 1966. He also obtained his teaching certificate. After college John became a teacher at Cherokee Junior High where he taught math and science for many years. He also taught at Weir Junior High.

In 1964, John met Maria Soper at Turner's Drive Inn in Columbus, and she quickly became the love of his life. They were married on November 26, 1965 and settled near Cherokee. John and Maria recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

John is survived by his wife, Maria, and two sons, John Potocnik of Tulsa, OK, and Jerry (Karen) Potocnik of Lee's Summit, MO, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as two sisters, Rosalee Mosburg and Linda Allen.

The family will receive visitors at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir on Friday, February 6, 2026 between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. Anyone wishing to pay their respects and share memories is welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be directed to the West Mineral Methodist Church. The family will hold a private ceremony at Star Cemetery.
