John Stephen Pottkotter, age 70, of
Reynoldsburg, Ohio, passed away peacefully due to complications following surgery on July 5, 2025, at Pataskala Oaks Care Center, surrounded by family and love. Throughout his life, John was known for his deep devotion to family, his unwavering faith, and his exceptional musical talent.
Born on August 14, 1954, in Ft. Recovery, Ohio, John was the beloved son of the late Robert and Marcia (Probolsky) Pottkotter. John began playing piano at an early age with the help of his mom. He played in Church, for school events, and was a member of local rock bands. In 1973, he met the love of his life, Susan DeMange, whom he married April 28, 1979. John built a meaningful career as an Accounts Manager in the produce industry, where he was known for his dependable and strong work ethic. He also answered a higher calling as the Music Minister at St. Pius X Parish for 44 years, where he touched countless lives through music and worship. His extraordinary skill at the piano and organ, and his gift for leading others in song became a lasting part of the parish community's spirit. More than anything though, John was a family man.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Susan (DeMange) Pottkotter, and his loving children: Megan (Jamie) Borowski and Molly (Molly R) Pottkotter. He was a proud and joyful grandfather to Emerson and Jude Borowski, who brought light and laughter into his later years. He is also survived by his in-laws, Ron (Joan) DeMange, Joe (Cindy) DeMange, and Mark (Donna) DeMange, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Marcia Pottkotter, his mother and father in-law Homer and Alice DeMange, his foster brother Richard Sanderell, his sister-in-law Karen DeMange, and many aunts and uncles.
John found joy in simple things-daily walks, spending time with loved ones, listening to and sharing music, visiting the beach, cheering on the Bengals and the Reds, working, and playing the piano with both grace and passion. His mantra, "Plan your work. Work your plan," was a guiding principle in both his personal and professional life. He will be remembered for his warmth, his music, his dedication to faith and family, and the quiet strength with which he lived his days especially as he persevered through the health obstacles he faced in the last two years of his life.
A memorial Mass and celebration of John's life will be held at St. Pius X Parish, 1051 Waggoner Rd,
Reynoldsburg, Ohio, visitation Friday, July 11 from 4 pm -7 pm; and Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, July 12 at 10 am. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Pataskala.
