CHARLOTTE - John A. S. Reynolds, 92, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; John will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Born in Lenoir, North Carolina, and raised in Charlotte, John was a proud alumnus of Central High School (Class of 1951), The Citadel (Class of 1955), and the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry (Class of 1958). Upon graduating from dental school, he began a distinguished 30-year service with the United States Naval Reserve, retiring at the rank of Captain. His love for the Navy, military science, and his country was a defining part of his life, and he often shared that passion with his family during his service at various military bases.
For four decades, Dr. Reynolds practiced dentistry in Charlotte with the practice of Drs. Graham, Graham, and Reynolds, where he cared for generations of patients and became a trusted figure in the community. He was known for his professionalism, compassion, and dedication to maintaining the dental health of countless families and friends.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Jeanne Fleming Reynolds, who passed in 2020; his parents, Archibald and Eva Craven Reynolds; his sister, Elizabeth Reynolds Moore; his son-in-law, Bill H. Webster; and his grandson, J. Matthew Wright.
He is survived by his three loving daughters: Kathleen Turner (David) of Charleston, SC; Mary R. Webster (Jamie Shoemaker) of Calabash, NC; and Patricia Jetton (Will) of Charlotte, NC. He is survived by his middle sister, Alice R. Todd, of Midlothian, VA. He also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly.
A man of quiet faith and deep service, John and Jeanne were longtime members of St. John's Episcopal Church in Charlotte, where John served in a variety of roles over the years. His love for God, Jesus Christ, and the promise of eternal life was steadfast and central to his life.
He also enjoyed many years as a member of Myers Park Country Club, where he was a regular presence on the golf course every Wednesday with friends. An additional passion for John and Jeanne in retirement was their participation in the Antique Auto Club of America, Hornets Nest Chapter, where they proudly toured with and displayed their beautifully restored 1969 Ford Mustang. His red Mustang won many awards, of which he was so proud. They made many special friends at the Auto Club in the Charlotte area and around the country. Traveling was also enjoyed by both John and Jeanne. They made it a point to visit all 50 states and many countries around the world, traveling by every modality to make sure each experience was unique and full of memories.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at The Cypress of Charlotte and Stewart Health Center, as well as the team at Via Health Partners (Hospice Care). Special thanks are also given to Reid Joyner & David Tipple, lay ministers from St. John's Episcopal Church, whose faithful visits and sharing of the Holy Sacrament brought great comfort to John over the past four years.
John Reynolds lived a life grounded in service, faith, and love for his family and country. His legacy endures in the many lives he touched.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held on Friday, April 11, 2025, at 11 AM at Evergreen Cemetery in Charlotte, NC. Family and friends are welcome to attend. Fellowship will follow the service and will be announced by the family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider giving to the following organizations that meant so much to John: The Citadel Foundation, Charleston, SC: Scholarship Fund, The Adams School of Dentistry, UNC Chapel Hill, NC: Scholarship Fund, VIA Health Partners (Hospice & Palliative Care) of Charlotte NC, or Humane Society of Charlotte.
